The UFO phenomenon has been studied by science for decades, however, why has this valuable information been hidden? Why has the problem not been openly discussed? Why is it a problem for the security of nations and the future of human communities on this planet? These questions are addressed in the analysis and the answers that are revealed show a dark reality that few are aware of or many do not want to acknowledge. Scientific evidence is presented, but a philosophical and sociological interpretation is also proposed that questions the continuity of the structural pillars of contemporary human civilization.

The way the problem has been approached is not helping science to remain a reliable discipline. Instead of appealing to doubt and having an open mind to discussion, science, especially academic science, has assumed a hermetic and even aggressive position against the professionals who have investigated the phenomenon.

This essay approaches the UFO phenomenon from a scientific and philosophical perspective. It is based on empirical data and reflections of philosopher Jason Reza Jorjani, who published the work “Closer Encounters” in 2021. The purpose is to demonstrate the veracity of the UFO phenomenon and explore its implications for human reality.

According to Jorjani, the abundance of empirical data supporting the reality of the UFO phenomenon makes rejecting it incomprehensible, especially coming from the academic scientific community. Although Jorjani acknowledges the existence of the phenomenon, he claims that there is not just one explanation, but several. In fact, he proposes six different interpretations:

  1. UFOs are directly linked to an occult terrestrial society.
  2. They are interdimensional. The ships come from another version of the earth, which opens the discussion to the real possibility of living in a multiverse.
  3. They are time machines. UFOs are technologically advanced ships that can travel in time and would come from the human future.
  4. They are accomplices/allies of a vastly ancient human civilization operating in stealth.
  5. They are not physical objects, i.e. they would not exist as such. Instead, they would be psychic projections of the collective unconscious. Their beings would be like ghosts, so the phenomenon would not be called extraterrestrial, but ultraterrestrial.
  6. UFOs are avatars created by programmers who manipulate the reality of the universe as if it were a computer simulation.

It is not the purpose of this essay to explain all these variants of the UFO phenomenon. For those who wish to do so, they can read Jorjani’s text. Our interest lies in extracting the relevant empirical data that come especially from military sources.

We will analyze this case in four parts: first, compile the existing empirical evidence on the nature of spacecraft that are not of human origin, but possess technology that is beyond human capabilities; expose the anomalous events at US and Russian military bases that would demonstrate that this is a serious problem for world security; to develop a reasoning about the consequences of these events in our political and social systems; and finally to shape a philosophical explanation that allows us to understand the consequences of the events described above in order to have an idea of what could be the true nature of reality and what role we play in it as conscious human beings.

Before starting, it is important to contextualize the problem. We are probably living a particular historical moment. For the first time a power such as the United States has acknowledged the existence of spacecraft of unknown origin that have been recorded by its monitoring systems over the last 30 years. In order to further discredit previous investigations, they have decided to use another category for their study. They are no longer UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects), but Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) (1). Well, since 2020 the U.S. government has recognized their existence and has initiated an official research program, but this must be taken with great care.

Jorjani, in fact, tells us that this official disclosure is deceitful and one has to question why they are doing it now and not before because the investigation of the phenomenon dates back at least to the 1950’s. There was a secret Pentagon program that collected information on these phenomena – the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) and was headed by Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence officer, who began to disclose information with Christopher Mellon, former undersecretary of defense of the U.S. government. The veracity of these events is now known because some of the videos that the government has recognized as authentic were part of Elizondo’s disclosure package delivered to American media such as The New York Times.

So there is something wrong here. Why only now recognize a phenomenon that has been studied since the middle of the last century? Why is research done in previous decades and conducted by the government and the military for national security reasons being ignored?

New disclosure data has brought the issue into the public orbit of worldwide discussion. The issue is definitely being addressed as a global security problem that alludes to the concern of world powers to the existence of a (non-human) agent with vastly superior technological and military capabilities.

To address the questions raised, it is crucial to understand the context and the variables involved. It is important to investigate the subject of UFOs in a scientific and systematic manner. Starting with this premise, let us analyze the most significant UFO data from the last century.

  • The empirical evidence of the UFO phenomenon

Although it may seem unlikely, the scientific study of UAPs goes back many decades, with governmental security institutions being the main researchers. But there have also been civil and academic initiatives that have studied the phenomenon and have done so with all the scientific rigor and without hiding the information (2).

Let’s start with a controversial military report. John Callahan, a high-ranking U.S. government official did not tolerate the cover-up practices. He openly stated that the study of UFOs was on the agenda of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the 1980s (Kean, 2010). His testimony was not intended to shock, but to warn of the irregularities occurring in the government in relation to this phenomenon.

Callahan’s testimony was influenced by his own experience. In 1986 he had firsthand knowledge of an extraordinary event that occurred in the skies over Alaska with a Japan Airlanes commercial airliner that came close to colliding with a group of aircraft carrier-sized spacecraft (3). The novelty of the event is that it was recorded by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radars. In addition, communications from the cockpit of the Japanese aircraft were recorded in which the captain of the aircraft could be heard describing in detail the aerial anomaly involving UFOs (Kean, 2010).

Since this was an extraordinary case that had testimonial support and objective data, the CIA did not take long to intervene (Kean, 2010). As expected, they ordered that the event could not be made public. They confiscated all recorded information and pressured those involved to deny the events (2010). However, they did not count on Callahan retaining a copy of the data that was released over the following years (2010).

From the civilian sphere there have been very serious initiatives that have studied the phenomenon, in fact, it is because of their results that we know more today. One of the pioneers in this field was the scientist Paul Hill, a NASA engineer who worked on the division of lunar flying platforms that were intended to be used on the Moon before the Apollo program was cancelled. Hill was also noted for his interest in the UFO phenomenon, in fact, he witnessed two events that aroused his curiosity to delve deeper into this type of research.

Hill (1995) was attracted by the type of flight that these craft had to bank and began to collect empirical data from sightings, radar records and landing tracks. Hill’s (1995) main sources of data would be the professional public organizations that were operating to investigate the UFO phenomenon: the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) and the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP).

What Hill (1995) set out to do was to study the physics of UFO spacecraft to determine if they defied the laws of physics. In his research (1995) he details, based on empirical data, what type of propulsion they use (4), principles of navigation and metallurgical engineering (5). Going into more detail he identified at least 10 types of craft, several subtypes of saucers and cigar-shaped craft (2010).

Another important scientific study was funded by Laurence Rockefeller in 1997 (Sturrock, 1999). The novelty of this initiative is that it involved dozens of leading scientists in different fields. Just to mention a few who made up the scientific management committee of the project are: Peter A. Sturrock, Director Emeritus of the Center for Space Science and Astrophysics at Stanford University and recipient of numerous prestigious awards and author of over two hundred scientific papers; Dr. Thomas E. Holzer, of the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado; Dr. Robert Jahn, Professor of Aerospace and Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Princeton University; Dr. David E. Pritchard, Professor of Aerospace and Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Princeton University; Dr. David E. Pritchard, Professor of Aerospace and Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Princeton University; and Dr. David E. Pritchard, Professor of Aerospace and Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Princeton University. David E. Pritchard, Professor of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Dr. Harold E. Puthoff, Professor of Physics, University of Oxford; Harold E. Puthoff, Director, Institute for Advanced Study, Austin, Texas; Dr. Charles R. Tolbert, Professor of Astronomy, University of Virginia; and Dr. Yervant Terzian, Professor of Astronomy and Chair, Department of Astronomy, Cornell University (1999).

Of course, these were not the only professionals involved in the project. There were geologists, experts in imaging studies, space sciences, meteorologists, among others. The volume of experts who participated was immense, as well as the results they produced and demonstrate the complexity of the UFO phenomenon. In short, the conclusion reached is that the UFO phenomenon is so complex that conventional explanations, scientifically speaking, cannot be applied to understand it (Sturrock, 1999). Thanks to the interdisciplinary methodology they used, they were able to discard the reasons commonly used in these cases to interpret them as natural phenomena. It is emphatically pointed out that the tests yielded results that have no explanation or relationship with any known natural phenomenon (1999).

The UFO phenomenon, it was concluded, is genuinely enigmatic and requires a serious scientific follow-up (Sturrock, 1999). To that end, it is necessary to establish cooperation between professionals from different areas in order to mature an institutional framework that supports scientific work (1999).

There are several aspects that this scientific group analyzed in detail and that led to the conclusions previously mentioned (Sturrock, 1999):

  1. Luminosity analysis of UFOs with a view to energetic physics.
  2. Rigorous evaluation of photographic evidence.
  3. Review of radar recordings.
  4. Geological and chemical analysis of landing tracks.

UFO data have been studied and disseminated for decades. It is notable that certain institutions, often private initiatives, have collected information through radar and other sources, indicating that a segment of the civilian population has taken the subject seriously and investigated it on their own. This raises the question of why academia has not played a more prominent role in this area. Assuming that governments study the phenomenon in secret, state institutions are not expected to acknowledge and share information with citizens. However, it is of concern that the academic sector, including universities and think tanks, has said little about it. The available information suggests that there are aspects of reality so complex that they defy current scientific understanding. This does not imply that they are incomprehensible, but rather that more research and interdisciplinary collaboration is needed, which is not happening. The lack of action by academia leaves society vulnerable to a phenomenon that, if it gains public notoriety, could have catastrophic consequences for societies, the state and civilization as a whole.

  • UFOs and military bases

It was previously mentioned that the investigation of the UFO-UAP phenomenon was initiated by the U.S. government (and other nations such as the Soviet Union) in the middle of the previous century due to security concerns. We will delve deeper into this because these types of incidents escalated so much that the military high command was dismayed with the type of direction the government took with the investigation and the type of decisions they made to solve the problem. Jorjani (2021) suspects that part of the disclosure of these events had its origin in this internal conflict between the centralized power of the government (to continue to cover up the events) and the military commanders (concerned about national security).

There are several extraordinary events (because of their UFO-UAP relationship) with ships that the U.S. military forces have recorded in the last century and that were never disclosed to the public. After several decades and due to the declassification of documents or their leakage, several lurid details have come to light (Jorjani, 2021).

One of these occurred in 1966, at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota (Kean, 2010). The incident occurred when two UFOs flew over the base and managed to remotely manipulate communications. The event almost resulted in a worldwide catastrophe because it inexplicably triggered the launch of nuclear missiles aimed at the Soviet Union. The American operators were able to stop the launch, but they also found that the silo where the nuclear warheads were stored had been tampered with. They found it open with no fingerprints on its perimeter.

A year later (1967) another incident occurred at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana (Kean, 2010). It was reported that a red-colored UFO flew over the base and landed above the launch control center. Twenty intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads were inexplicably disabled. The only reasonable argument given was that the craft emitted an electromagnetic pulse in each of the silos where the missiles were seventy feet below the ground.

In 1980 another event occurred, this time in Suffolk, England, at a military base shared between NATO and the United States (Kean, 2010). Military personnel reported that a triangular-shaped craft landed near the base and hovered on the ground for a few moments allowing the military to approach and make contact with the craft. Witnesses indicated that the craft had hieroglyphic-like symbols on it and was radiating static electricity. Another fact that they observed was that the spacecraft at the moment of take-off and disappearance left indentations in the ground that were examined and revealed high doses of radiation. As in the previous cases, these spacecraft manipulated the controls of the base that stored nuclear weapons.

The United States was not the only country affected by this extraordinary intervention by ships of unknown origin. The Soviet Union was also a victim of these attacks. It happened in 1989 at the Kapustin Yar military complex (Kean, 2010). A UFO flew over the part of the complex that stored nuclear weapons directing a laser beam at the facility. In 1982 something worse happened in a Soviet Union military complex in Ukraine because the UFO managed to activate the nuclear missiles for launch (2010). The operation could be stopped, but the vulnerability of human technology to these ships of extraordinary technology became evident.

Jorjani (2021) has documented several events that represent a significant threat to national and international security. These events involve the manipulation of nuclear missiles, suggesting an attempt to annihilate major world powers and, potentially, all of humanity. A common pattern is that these incidents occur at both Russian and U.S. military bases that possess nuclear weaponry. Most worryingly, these attacks occur rapidly, leaving the armed forces with no time to react, indicating that the technology used is far more advanced than anything developed by human powers, putting us in a position of extreme vulnerability.

This was precisely the argument of the U.S. military leadership. The first director of the CIA, Vice Admiral Hilenkoetter, publicly said in 1960 that the problem should be openly discussed because there is a certain concern in the high commands of the air force (Kean, 2010). He also recognized that the issue is being hidden from public opinion. He warned the U.S. Congress of the danger of these ships flying over military bases that could lead to World War III.

Despite these warnings and the recognition that it is a serious problem recognized in the high spheres of military power, the U.S. government continued to hide the problem from public opinion. Internally, it developed a strategy to delay the problem. The famous blue book project was created, which was supposed to serve to scientifically investigate the issue, but it ended up being a fraud that the military itself denounced because many of the critical events were not included as part of the project’s final report.

So this is not a problem that arose in 2020. Nor has the attention of the authorities been strictly limited to that time. We are talking about a series of events that have been occurring since the middle of the last century. That’s 70 years of incidents. Why the government has been withholding information is something that can be explained in the next section.

  • UFOs and the collapse of civilization

This essay was justified by asking an interesting question that few have taken seriously. With the evidence gathered (which is little indeed because there is tons of empirical data) the question becomes mysterious and even fatal. What would be the implications for humanity of the actual existence of non-human beings who have extremely advanced technology and who have had hostile contact with the nations that govern this planet?

The answer is not very optimistic, in fact, the data is telling us that our civilization is very vulnerable. But, in addition, let us take into account that the current political systems we have are secular, at least those governed by rules based on democratic liberalism, and as such, have spread a discourse of omnipresence of the State and its institutions, because there is no other power that can confront it. But what if that power exists?

Alexander Wendt and Dr. Raymond Duvall (2008) analyzed this issue from the perspective of political theory in their article “Sovereignty and the UFO” published in the academic journal Political Theory. The authors explore the idea of the UFO phenomenon as something real. Being so, the first thing they notice is the existence of a systematic concealment whose purpose is to avoid public discussion of the subject. But this concealment is normal, or at least that would be expected from a political system that has been universalized and has an indisputable secular figure as the State. For the authors (2008) this response would reflect “a symptom of authoritarian anxiety, a socially subconscious fear of what the reality of UFOs might mean for modern government.”

Fear is a key element in the concealment of the UFO phenomenon. This fear manifests itself in institutional practices that encourage indifference and derision towards UFOs, reflecting an insecurity that the authorities do not want to acknowledge. Therefore, it is expected that the official stance of governments is (and should be) one of denial. Duvall and Wendt (2008) explain why concealment is justified.

First, the UFO represents a potential physical threat. The existence of a powerful and unknown non-human otherness questions the position of the human being in the world and with it the conviction of centrality and power he has on the planet. Indeed, if the UFO derives from a non-human civilization that can visit the earth, it means that its technology is infinitely superior. The fear of colonization or even extermination becomes a real concern to which the human being is devoid of a response except the fear of uncertainty or annihilation of his species.

There is another concern about UFOs and the possibility that they are real. Their existence would generate uncertainty, but it would also awaken the natural impulse to defend what human beings consider as their own: the planet, ecosystems, animals, societies. Although logic tells us that UFO technology is superior, this leads us to conclude that states alone will not be able to face the problem (in the case of a military confrontation). A possible scenario would be the creation of a superorganism with the capacity to respond militarily and technologically to the non-human other. This means that we would begin to seriously discuss the possibility of creating a world government. This is such a thorny issue that no State has seriously raised it because there are many uncontrollable variables involved. The sovereignty of peoples, for example, is an inalienable characteristic and is the basis on which modern states endure.

As we see, then, the UFO problem threatens the fundamental structure of modern states. From this arises the need to keep the subject in reserve and prevent it from being discussed in a scientific and public dimension. The reason why there is so much secrecy and why a culture of discrediting the few scientific initiatives to study the phenomenon has been created has to do with this variable of the problem. It is simply not possible to discuss something that could lead to the destruction of the modern state and the way of life we have adopted as a civilization.

Duvall and Wendt (2008) finally find in the UFO phenomenon a threat to the central positioning of the human being in reality, or cultural condition better known as anthropocentrism. The authors clarify that this cultural condition is another of the pillars of modern states. It is on this basis that states justify their structures and demand obedience from their citizens in order to obtain resources to sustain their structures. If this semantics is destroyed by the presence of a technologically superior non-human otherness, it makes no sense to continue to maintain them if they are incapable of providing certainty and security to the population. Obedience would naturally derive in rebellion towards human power structures, but they would also create a new type of obedience or loyalty towards the infinitely superior non-human other. This situation is so fantastic that it raises the real possibility of something analogous to the materialization of God, but in the extraordinary figure of the UFO.

  • Hermeticism and destruction

Our societies claim to be scientifically advanced because reason supposedly guides the destiny of civilization. In this assumption, human beings naively believe that they are the owners of the world and are in absolute control of reality (which they can manipulate as an object that is predictable). This is a total farce. The societies we have live blindfolded. We only see what we are allowed to see. Knowledge is neither universal nor democratic. The UFO phenomenon confirms this tendency. On the one hand, it hides the fact that life is dispersed throughout the universe and that it has evolved in a discontinuous way with civilizations more advanced than ours. It is also concealing the knowledge of the true substratum of reality, which is neither universally deterministic nor localistic.

Although quantum physics has demonstrated that reality is intertwined in space and time, this knowledge has been limited to the subatomic realm. Established science tends to discredit any attempt to apply these quantum principles to the macroscopic world as pseudoscience. However, the UFO phenomenon could be an example of how quantum entanglement is used in practical and advanced applications, such as jamming secret military bases and manipulating nuclear weapons, indicating a level of technology far more advanced than currently known to mankind.

The mind-blowing maneuvers of the ships, the drastic speed changes and the ghost effect they have demonstrated (they appear and disappear out of nowhere) confirms that non-humans have probably hundreds of thousands of years of advanced knowledge about the properties of light, zero-point energy, wormhole manipulation based on quantum principles that we currently only handle as fantasy.

So one of the first conclusions of this analysis is the need to rethink reality and assume that determinism and localism have limited applications. It is not being suggested that they are useless, but rather that their virtues are limited. To understand the most complex substratum of reality it is necessary to appeal to quantum physics and that implies thinking that its effects are macroscopic as well. If we manage to understand this and massify it to the point of promoting a cultural change of meaning, a large part of the problem would be solved, because we would then be prepared to understand a more radical dimension of reality such as traveling faster than light, for example, or using teleportation to travel instantaneously to any part of the cosmos.

Assuming these changes will not be easy because doing so implies getting rid of a cultural heritage of millennia and which is the basis of our society. But if we think clearly we will understand that, if we do not assume the change by our own initiative, the effect will be devastating when the UFO phenomenon is publicly revealed because immediately our societies (not being prepared) will inevitably fall into religious worship, obedience and submission to infinitely powerful non-human beings, but of which we have no idea what their true purposes will be.

Thus the practice of concealment becomes suspect. Duvall and Wendt are right when they say that hermeticism lies in the preservation of existing power structures. But this will not always be the case. The presence of non-human others is becoming more and more evident or we have more and more advanced technological means to detect them. So at some point the phenomenon will become too inescapable to continue denying it. If this is so, and the institutions of power know it will be so, would it not be prudent to prepare our societies for this radical change of meaning? If they do not do so, is it because they naively believe they can continue to hide reality indefinitely or because they are accomplices in a cosmic plan created by the other non-humans?

We do not have an answer to these questions. The only thing we can say is that the phenomenon exists, that it is very complex and that it pushes our understanding of reality to the limit. This being so, the State and its institutions that shape or order our societies are not prepared to face the problem, therefore, our civilization is in a delicate state of vulnerability, if we add to that the contemporary problems of the world such as poverty, climate change, globalized crime or the excessive ambition of the power groups.

The scenario we have is bleak whatever the projection we imagine. Humanity seems condemned to live in a future marked by its existential crisis and survival. And in the midst of all this chaos it seems that very few will survive, but at a very high price. Jason Reza Jorjani, in one of the chapters of his book “Closer Encounters”, hypothesizes that the UFO phenomenon responds to the materialization of the state of alarm that the human collective unconscious is projecting on itself. It is like a mirror that reflects the future of humanity towards its past and that would have the purpose of altering the future (catastrophic) of the human being and of the planet.

Jorjani alludes to the thought of Frederik Myers who identifies alien visitors as expressions of the imaginary force of human evolution. The renowned researcher Whitley Strieber also agrees in his work “Communion” where he states that UFOs are a representation of human consciousness in an evolved form projecting itself from the future. This means that the events that occur do not have a physical basis, but are psychic phenomena.

Jorjani shares these arguments and reinforces them by arguing that they represent the metamorphosis of humanity on the psychic level. This being so, these beings are addressing us from the future, they do not come from another planet. They are emissaries of the human future, but of a failed one. For Jorjani their presence is only justified as an attempt to remedy something catastrophic that will occur in the future. Thus, what these beings would try to do is to alter the trajectory of humanity, to affect its metamorphosis while it is in a larval state before becoming something with more potential, with more capacity for life and creation (something that unfortunately has led us to our own decadence and annihilation).

We could invoke Jung at this point for a theoretical basis. Indeed, Jung developed a broad understanding of the nature of the collective unconscious and the premonitory capacities it has manifested in dreams and extraordinary events of synchronicity. Quantum physics also tells us that the time of subatomic particles does not have the linear order that we see in local realism because in that dimension the past and the future are intertwined, hence there can be links from the future to the past.

So Jorjani’s argument is not unreasonable. Jung’s theory today enjoys a great reputation because of the findings of subatomic particle physics that breaks determinism and local-temporal causality. If we think about it carefully, the collective unconscious could use these quantum effects (because they are mental) to manifest itself in the present and warn humanity that its destiny is dehumanization and the destruction of life on the planet.

Let us use the logical argument to think that if the non-human beings that have been sighted are indeed humans of the future something really tragic happened in their history (which would ultimately be our history). We are amazed by their technology, their knowledge, but terrified by their physical appearance. His anatomy seems to be the result of badly conducted genetic experiments or the result of being exposed to a nuclear catastrophe for a long time. It is important to realize that genetics and nuclear weapons are very advanced and dangerous technologies today that could trigger a global catastrophe if we do not handle them responsibly.

The world is a powder keg these days. Many thinkers have warned that we are living the end of times and because of the latent threats I think they are right. If the UFO phenomenon has been hidden for decades, it means that the purpose of the humans of the future has failed because we are at the gates of the apocalypse and that outcome seems inevitable. If so, our destiny is defined and unalterable. At least we know that a small portion of humans will survive. They will probably attain immortality and will be demi-gods. They will be something more than humans (genetically altered beings capable of traveling through the cosmos), but they will not be able to alter the past to prevent the catastrophe of their species due to the ambition and stupidity of their ancestors.

  1. For the purposes of this paper, both terms will be used interchangeably.
  2. That these studies have not been taken into account despite being publicly available is part of the scientific negationism that exists on the subject.
  3. This was the description given by the captain of the Japanese plane and corroborated by the crew members themselves, who were astonished to see the colossal structure of the ships with which they almost collided.
  4. A recurring aspect of these spacecraft is that they can maneuver turns at an angle impossible for human technology, as well as make sudden changes in speed and direction. These and other maneuvers described in Hill’s study have direct consequences on nature or people who have the opportunity to be at a certain distance from them. It has been seen that trees and their branches suffer a strong impact even when they do not have a direct contact with the spacecraft, there have also been reports of overturned cars, broken windshields, detachment of roof tiles, among others.
  5. Hill confirms that these types of spacecraft produce radiation levels hazardous to human health. The range of radiation they emit, according to Hill’s study, is between 25 electron volts at the lower end of the X-ray band and 3 million electron volts at the lower end of the gamma-ray spectrum, which makes these craft extremely lethal radioactive emission equipment for any life form unlucky enough to be exposed to direct contact. Hill was also able to determine that these spacecraft can generate burns to those nearby, but not from radiation, but from the ultrasonic frequencies they emit.
