This is an interesting video clip by the American band Darling Cruel. The visual composition is a mixture of controversial themes such as forbidden love, infidelity, the class distinction that can exist in an affective relationship, but the most interesting thing is the exploration that is made from the dream as a manifestation of the unconscious. Being themes associated with the affections and the mysterious power of the mind, it is recurrent to find in the videclip a dark blue atmosphere.

In the first shots, for example, we see a stage decorated with this atmosphere, but we also observe that the musicians appear illuminated by a flash of white light. What is interesting is the floor. They are all standing on a liquid surface, which creates a spiritual atmosphere. Taking into consideration that the interpreter of the band is one of the protagonists of the video (i.e. the plot that develops) we could deduce that he is representing himself as a noble, spiritual figure, exposed to sacrifice. But to understand better let’s develop a little bit the content of the videoclip.

The plot is very simple, the novelty is in the symbols, colors and locations of the protagonists. The video shows us the uncertainty that a woman feels before getting married. Apparently, she has an emotional attachment to a past lover who does not belong to her social class, but is linked to him by an uncontrolled passion. The video clip builds this emotional crisis in different moments and basically appeals to the dream as a supernatural instance that has a powerful symbolism that reveals the fears, frustrations and passions of people.

Indeed, the first shot of the female protagonist is made in her bedroom while she rests and thinks alone, at some point she seems to fall asleep until she wakes up abruptly shocked by the revelation that the dream has given her. From here on, the video clip shows some of the contents of the woman’s ludic experience. First, we see her passionately embracing her lover and kissing. The background that accompanies them again emphasizes the dark blue and the protagonists are dressed in black. This could reveal that although their encounter is passionate, there is a strong emotional component that has somehow linked them. Passionate love has led them to be affectively intertwined, that is why blue is appropriate in this scene because it indicates that they are not only united by their bodies, but also by their affections. But they are both wearing black, that could indicate that they are both hiding their relationship or experiencing it around breaking the rules that govern their lives. One could argue that they are lovers living their experience in hiding. The following sequence confirms this.

The woman appears at an altar in a white dress together with a man who is not her lover. A priest in front of them conducts the marriage ritual. The unusual thing happens when the woman’s lover interrupts the ceremony, opens the door of the altar where the marriage is being celebrated and behind him there is an intense light. The woman returns to look and is surprised by the man’s presence, but only she seems to notice the event because her future husband and the priest remain focused on the ritual as if nothing had happened. Let’s analyze some visual components of the scene.

But the disruption occurs when the woman’s lover appears on the scene. There is something novel at this point, because this character appears with an intense light behind him and wears black clothes. Visually it may be somewhat contradictory, like saying that there are angels in hell or demons in heaven, but the image would be suggesting that his presence not only alludes to the love that unites them, but to the imperfection they share (as lovers who live their passion in secret).

In her dream the woman appears walking through the corridors of a palace. She wears a luxurious black dress and carries a candlestick in her left hand. This setting would reflect a part of her personality associated with the luxurious life she leads, but which is being obscured by the presence of her lover. The candles precisely indicate rationality, it is a sign that reason must impose itself in her life so that the status quo does not break down. Later we see that the woman has met her lover and they are once again engaged in a moment of intense passion, however, in a later scene we see her running away through a dark passageway as she looks back to ensure that no one is chasing her. This scene is powerful not only because we see that a part of the woman’s psyche is deeply tied to that of her lover, we also see that there is an internal struggle in her personality that is pushing her to break out of that emotional dependency. That is why we see her running and fleeing from a dungeon-like place that would represent the lascivious part of her personality that wants to sink into the emptiness of passions. In this scene we do not see her carrying candles, therefore, we understand that she has let herself be overcome by her shadow.

However, at the end of the video we observe the woman inside her house looking through the windows at her lover. Here it is important to note some details. The woman appears in an elevated position in relation to her lover. Moreover, her gaze is adjusted to that position, so the scene visually builds that relationship of superiority of the woman and inferiority of the lover who remains outside the structure while looking up as she leaves him. This shot is powerful because it would indicate that the woman overcame her shadow by expelling the negative influence of her lover. However, it should not be forgotten that this is a visual construction of her personality. The shadow is a basic component that we cannot get rid of, the only thing we can do is to seclude it or ignore it, but by carrying a force it will only accumulate to explode at some point. What this video would be indicating us is that, the representations that we have of the world are in permanent conflict in our mind and in their dispute our senses of the real are defined.
